Yirra Miya Passes Welcome Dance on to GNPS Students

Yirra Miya

On Wednesday for Reconciliation Week, Murrumbidgee Regional High School hosted 25 North Griffith Public School students to pass on a traditional Indigenous welcome dance.

Over the hour, the MRHS Yirra Miya dancers Kisa Nauer, Danika Broome, Tulsa Stephenson and Nevaeh Charles walked the young dancers through the steps and gestures. They also explained the meaning behind the ceremony that they themselves learned from Burrundi Theatre late last year.

Overseeing the Year 3 – 6 students were teacher Ms Di Maloni and recent MRHS graduate Tamsin Grieg. The North Griffith students hope to perform the dance at their school in the coming weeks.

“The Murrumbidgee girls were great with the primary school kids,” explains ALEC teacher Allison Stewart, “It’s great to see Indigenous knowledge pass through the generations this way.”
