Year 12 student Piper Stewart spent last week rubbing shoulders with some of the movers and shakers in Australian sport at the Australian Olympic Changemaker Summit in Canberra.
The Australian Olympic Changemaker program celebrates young Australians who power the change in Australian sport. Piper was one of 25 student leaders were selected from nominees across Australia.
The students were mentored by athletes Brooke Hanson OAM OLY (swimming), Nathan Katz OLY (judo), Matthew Horton OAM OLY (Swimming), Rachel Gunn (Breaking), Sami Kennedy-Sim OLY (freestyle skiing) and Chloe Dalton OAM (rugby sevens). The purpose of the two-day summit was to provide a vital voice for young people across Australia and to provide recommendations to the AOC.
Piper was nominated for the program because of her work with Bambigi (Wiradjuri for to swim), an Indigenous swimming charity which has helped to teach more than 300 First Nations children to swim. She founded Bambigi when she was 12 years old and has since raised over $40 000 for the organisation.
Piper and her colleagues offered insight on making the Olympics accessible to rural and remote communities, social inclusion, sustainability and the benefits of sport during the summit. The group also got to tour the AIS and check out question time at parliament house during their stay in the Australian capital.
Well done Piper, for your amazing work with Bambigi and for representing the school on a national level!
