Year 7 Learns About Consent and ConnectYOUth2680

Image Consent

Year 7 was visited today by Lara Rossetto from Griffith City Council and Will Burns from KD Solutions to discuss a whole range of issues affecting Griffith youth.

The first speaker, Will, presented to the young men and women about consent and image sharing. According to the presentation, 1 in 4 young people surveyed had sexual content and images shared with them and 1 in 7 young people surveyed had their images used in an inappropriate way.

Will gave the students some information on the legality of sharing intimate images (people under the age of 16 cannot legally consent to intimate images being shared). He also discussed the consequences of sharing intimate images and gave some advice on what to do if your image is being misused. These were:

  • Report or block the user
  • Speak to a trusted adult about it
  • Take the issue to the police

Mr Burns also walked the year group through using the eSafety website to report the non-consensual sharing of intimate images.

The presentation was then followed by a quick word from Lara Rossetto, who was there to speak about ConnectYOUth2680. The team catch up every fortnight and speak about council issues affecting the youth of Griffith. Ms Rossetto also got the group to brainstorm ideas to engage young people in the community.

You can find out more information about consent and image sharing at the eSafety website. You can also follow ConnectYOUth2680 on Facebook or Instagram.
