Earlier this term, Year 7 science submitted models of a variety of different cells made from a whole host of both conventional and unconventional materials. The project was part of the living systems component of the curriculum.
The project asked the students to create of a cell from any material they so wished. The results ranged from plasticine, clay, cardboard through to polystyrene and even cake. Students were also asked to evaluate how well their model communicate the cell structure and discuss the limitations of their medium.
“Overall, the models were really well done,” explains science teacher Tom Chapman, “They allowed the students to engage creatively with the content and got the students to consider how to best communicate a scientific idea.”
