Year 9 Explores Careers in Medicine

Year 9 Medicine

Last week, Year 9 got to explore careers in medicine courtesy of Grow Your Own. Students got a peak at what happens behind the scenes at St Vincent’s Hospital and the Griffith Ambulance Station and got to speak to some of the medical staff on the front line.

Gabby Wood took the students through the patient journey at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Griffith, walking them through check-in and registration through to the operating theatre. Students got to scrub up and see the various surgical tools up close. The tour then included a light lunch and a Q and A session with various medical workers.

Students then were bussed across town to see the inner workings of the Griffith Ambulance Station. Paramedics Mary and Shannon were on hand to answer all the questions the students had like they’re strangest callout, the number of jobs they go on a night and what they do between jobs. The group were then taken out to see the ambulances up close which they absolutely loved.

“I think programs like this are important to expose our kids to the opportunities available beyond school,” explains Careers teacher Carol-Anne Sutton, “The earlier they’re exposed to these opportunities, the better a student can prepare for a career in these industries.”

“Most importantly,” adds Mrs Sutton, “It means that we’re networking with local industry to fill gaps in their workforce so that they can grow and thrive.”

Special thanks to Rebecca Barry and Alishia Tomlinson from Three Rivers Department of Health for making this tour possible.
