MRHS Entrepreneurs Shine at Commerce Day

Commerce Day

Last Thursday was Commerce Day at Murrumbidgee Regional High School. Traditionally part of the Year 9 commerce curriculum, Commerce Day challenges students to pitch, market and run a business.

Preparations for Commerce Day run over the course of Term 3. Four groups of approximately five students put their heads together, write up a business plan and a marketing plan in preparation for their one day in business.

The businesses were largely food based. The Breakfast Bar, which ran before school and during lunch, offered pancakes with a selection of different toppings. The Cavin Café sold cakes, fairy bread and Milo. Balloon Break offered a game of skill where punters had to hit a balloon with a dart to score a prize.

The winner of the day however was the Sugar Shack, which offered a variety of saccarine treats and drinks. Proving that location is key when it comes to business, the Sugar Shack operated directly across from the school canteen, which is restricted to providing healthy, tasty nutritious food options. Naturally, they drew a lot of business away from an already established market.

“Commerce day is a great opportunity to do some project based learning,” explains commerce teacher Kara Sergi, “Students get to create a business, implement a business plan and learn from their mistakes. It’s a great trial run for Australian Business Week in Year 10.”
