Year 7 Chinese Pen Pal Program

Chinese Pen Pal Program

Year 7 LOTE (Languages Other Than English) received their first package of letters from the new interschool pen pal program last week.

The pen pal program is an initiative arranged between Murrumbidgee Regional High School, Rouse Hill High School, Plumpton High School and Murray High School. The letters were treated as an introduction between the students and were lovingly decorated. Students were assessed on their letters before they were sent off. The messages were to be written in Chinese characters and had to conform to the Chinese letter format.

Murrumbidgee Regional High School offers German and Chinese classes as part of the LOTE curriculum. All students are expected to study LOTE in Year 7 and may elect to further their studies in LOTE beyond that.

“Australia is a really multicultural country so it’s really beneficial for students to learn Mandarin,” explains LOTE teacher Wan-Chi Lu, “A program like our letter exchange really brings the language to life for our students. They were really excited to get these letters.”
