Australian Business Week 2022

ABW

Year 10 got a taste of life as business owners during our Australian Business Week activities. Students had to build a business from the ground up, handle the marketing and deal with share prices and fluctuations in the stock market in a whole year group competition.

The students were charged with setting up and running a sustainability business this year. Among the offerings were clothing made from recycled textiles, durable toys made from sustainable resources and products made from plastics recovered from oceans and waterways.

The students’ hard work culminated on Thursday when they had to pitch their product to a panel of experts in an oral presentation, air a 30-second TV advertisement in front of their peers and run a stand in the hall to generate buzz for their product.

It was the toy company Choc-A-Bloc that won the week. Between the computerised business simulation, their teamwork, their trade display, their oral presentation and their ad, the team scored the most points throughout the week.

There were also some welcome distractions to help the teams work together better during the 4-day event. For example, the egg and spoon race on Tuesday was surprisingly heated.

“I think overall, the students were really engaged,” explains organiser Kara Sergi, “It’s a long week, but they learn a lot from it. They develop leadership skills and teamwork skills from building a business together. I’m looking forward to doing it all again next year!”
