IST Students Learning the Skills of Tomorrow

Computer Science

The Year 9 Information, Software and Technology (IST) class have been delving deep into coding and its practical applications. From algorithms to design thinking, the class have applied their critical problem solving skills to a whole host of issues.

One of the things the class has been focusing on is spreadsheets and how they process data with algorithms. For anyone who has ever balanced a budget, they’ll know it’s an essential skill for fast and accurate book keeping.

The students have also been learning programming with the Codey Rocky robot. These robots are able to move, talk, listen and sense any obstacle in their path. They can be programmed interract with one another and their surroundings using an application called Makeblock. Makeblock is rooted in the Python programming language, so it’s a great introduction into coding practices and AI.

“During the pandemic, IT jobs are in high demand.” explains Jenny Chong, IST Teacher, “By 2023, the government says 3 out of 5 jobs will require high end IT skills. Computer science not only gives students these skills but also teaches them problem solving which can be applied to almost anything in life.”
