This morning, Cheyenne Webb and Laiza Anaya took part in the Plain English Speaking Award. The two Year 10 students had to speak for approximately 8 minutes on a topic of their choice and then were asked to give a 3 minute impromptu speech on a topic provided to them only minutes beforehand.
The Plain English Speaking Award aims to encourage the use of clear and effective spoken English and has been an institution in schools since 1978. The project has something of a twist this year, with the speeches being delivered on Zoom.
“I’m proud of my speech.” said Cheyenne of her presentation, “I had a lot of fun with it. I was trying to make people think, and I feel I did that.”
“I haven’t done public speaking since Year 5.” adds Laiza, “I’ve done debating but this is different. In public speaking, you have get your point of view across. In debating you also have a team to fall back on, but in public speaking you have to rely on yourself.”
The students were pitched against students across the Riverina and unfortunately didn’t pass through to the next level. They were, however, praised for their unique takes and eloquence. Well done, girls!
