Year 7 English Try Snowball Writing

Snowball Writing

Year 7 English spent a period throwing ideas around… Literally. The class had five minutes to write the first paragraph before scrunching the story up and throwing it to someone else in the class to continue.

The story was then built upon by a different author, who had five minutes of planning time before adding another paragraph. The process was repeated before returning to the original author, who had to round the piece off with a fourth and final paragraph.

The task was an opportunity for the class, who are currently studying the Hunger Games, to build on their narrative writing skills. The work produced by the students will be used as inspiration for their assessment, which will require the class to write the first chapter of their own dystopian novel.

“It was interesting to see how people took a prompt into exciting new directions,” explains English teacher Libby Ridgway, “The exercise was a great exercise in collaborative writing and will work as a great foundation for their upcoming assessment.”

Year 7 will move on to study film theory and criticism next term.
