Last Wednesday our Open Boys Rugby Union team came within spitting distance of becoming state champions at the NSW State Warratah Shield.
MRHS blew through the semis against Camden High School off the back of an impromptu training session with former professional rugby player Nana Dontoh. The finals against Randwick High School, however, was a different story.
In a tit for tat match against the Eastern Suburbs school, Murrumbidgee unfortunately came up short after bombing a try in the final few minutes of the game. Randwick Boys High School ended up taking the shield 24-21.
Though the team have been strong throughout the season, it was Mason Payne’s strong attack and defence and Willie Loganimoce’s hard work in the forwards that kept Murrumbidgee competitive on the day.
“We were extremely unlucky to have lost,” explains coach Richard Wiseman, “The boys played a high standard of football throughout the day. They’ll have to train hard and come back stronger next year.”
Murrumbidgee’s rugby union season isn’t over just yet, with our under 16 boys and under 16 girls team travelling to Sydney to play in the finals next week. More to come.
