Year 8 HSIE took to the playground on Friday afternoon to try their hand at some ancient sports.
History teachers Mrs Laidler and Ms Skinner decided to wrap up the Year 8’s latest unit on Vikings with a round of traditional Viking games. Among the challenges on offer were Toga-Honk (a one on one seated tug of war), Skindlegen (a four way tug of war) and Jomswikinger (a Middle Ages take on a blindfolded pillow fight).
“By engaging with the games,” explains Year 8 HSIE teacher Melissa Laidler, “The students really got an understanding of what the Vikings went through.”
“They’ve been asking to do it again,” adds Caprice Skinner, “During the discussion at the end of the lesson the students were keen to relate all of these skills back to skills the Vikings would have needed in their day-to-day life.”
