For the past three weeks, Year 10 students have been building mental resilience through YAM.
YAM (Youth Aware of Mental Health) uses discussion and roleplay to get students talking about mental health. The program focuses on building resilience and promoting early intervention and help seeking behaviours.
The role play scenarios cover:
everyday choices and the outcomes of our actions
becoming aware of our feelings and how to manage stress and crisis situations
listening to others and speaking about stress and anxiety
YAM is an international initiative, which has seen some impressive improvements in students’ mental wellbeing since its introduction. The program was delivered by accredited trainers from the Department of Education. Delivery was supported by Jeremy Sharpe, our school’s Youth Outreach Worker, as well as Dylan Oliver and the rest of the local headspace team.
