Year 10 History have been learning about the life of Eddie Mabo and his struggle to get Native Title recognised under Australian Law. The students had to create a 4 minute presentation on Mabo, the story of the Mer people and his fight to get native title recognised under Australian law.
To accompany their presentation, the class also had to create an aid to help them tell Mabo’s story. Students were able to employ power point and posters or if they were feeling brave, other media. Ruby Jones and Ameena Baryamai decided to take it upon themselves to create picture books out of the Mabo story to stunning effect. Needless to say, both students aced the assignment.
“The assessment was designed to give the students a more holistic understanding of the impact of Eddie Mabo on the fight for rights and freedoms by Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander Australians.” explains Year 10 History teacher Ms Duly, “The aim was to get the students to see the result of a long term struggle. What you do may not necessarily pay off in your lifetime, but it can still affect the lives of many, many people.”
