MRHS Students Honoured At Australia Day Awards

Australia Day Awards Ceremony

Student Zavian Williams and the MRHS under 14s rugby league team were among those honoured at the Griffith Australia Day ceremony at the Griffith Regional Theatre last week.

Student Zavian Williams won the coveted Young Citizen of the Year for his work promoting Aboriginal culture in Griffith through music. Williams, who learned to play the didgeridoo from his father, has been playing for some ten years and has earned himself a reputation as a talented player.

Zavian has played at ceremonies at Griffith Base Hospital, the opening of the Griffith Regional Sports Centre and Griffith Survival Day. Perhaps his crowning achievement (so far) was playing for Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the NSW Bush Summit held at the Griffith Regional Theatre in August 2022.

Meanwhile, the MRHS under 14s rugby league team took out Sports Team of the Year for their astonishing performance at the Buckley Shield. Their stunning victory against Kiama High School in September 2022 and their victory against Edmund Rice College at the All Schools Championship saw the team crowned best in the state.

Assistant Coach Matt Ruming, Deputy Principal Richard Wiseman, team captain Matty Adams and several members of the team went to the ceremony to collect the award on behalf of the school.

“The team had a legendary run in 2022,” explains assistant coach Matt Ruming, “It’s really great to see the boys get recognised for their efforts.”

Congratulations to all of our award recipients and well done!
