Ancient History Visit Australian Museum

Ancient History Excursion

Year 11 and 12 Ancient History students headed off to Canberra to check out the Ancient Greeks: Athletes, Warriors and Heroes exhibition in Canberra last Friday 1 April. The students made the round trip in a day, leaving at 6am and returning at 8pm, tallying up 8 hours on the road and 2 trips to Maccas.

The exhibition, which was showing at the National Museum of Australia, featured items on loan from the British Museum. The over 170 objects explored Ancient Greek sport, politics, drama, music and warfare. They reveal how competition underpinned all aspects of ancient Greek life, generating a vibrant and innovative society that endures in the artefacts and stories surviving today.

Although the exhibition ties into the Women of Ancient Greece and Rome unit in the Ancient History HSC curriculum, the excursion provided the students with a rare opportunity to see a collection of artefacts that may never come to Australia again.

A big thank you must go to Ms. Murdoch and Mr. Carruthers for organising and supervising this massive day – a miniature Greek epic in itself.
