Year 10 Engineers Play Rocket League

Rocket League

Year 10 Industrial Technology (Engineering) faced off against each other last week, using their handmade remote-control cars to play a game of soccer.

The game was the culmination of a semester of learning about control systems. Students were expected to take a wiring diagram and adapt it for playing football. The cars were fitted with 3 wheels and 2 engines to help them manoeuvre and were controlled by a Wifi connector that allowed up to six different commands. For most of the vehicles, this meant moving left, right, forward and backwards.

The games were played in doubles with players exercising not only their engineering skills but also their reflexes and soccer tactics. The matches were friendly and didn’t bear weight on the grading of the assignment.

“The students seemed to enjoy the project and it deepened their understanding of electronic control systems,” explains engineering teacher Keith Wells, “There are definitely some future electrical and mechanical engineers in this class.”
